Early pioneers came up with an idea to start an organization named Andhra Cultural Association, and it was formally established on January 13, 1969. It was registered as ACA, as a not for profit organization, and the initial Executive Committee consisted of President, Treasurer, Social Secretary, Literary Secretary.
The events of the first two decades:
The primary objective of ACA is to promote Telugu culture and language. Most of the activity centered on celebrating our festival days, as a group, and conducting some cultural events; Singing, Dramas, Sports etc. It is important to note that a significant number of newcomers to city arrived from 1976 to 1983. As a result the activity of ACA has been at it’s height during this period. Many sports events took place during this time, and annual competition was held with intense competition, Table Tennis, caroms, Addu, Bridge, Badminton, Chess and children sports. We also engaged in several soccer matches with other communities. This was also the time we held many Telugu dramas.
ACA Magazine - "VANI": It is worth noting that ACA started producing a magazine, once in two years named as VANI. It gave an opportunity to many of our members, adults and youth, to write much about Telugu articles and also stories about their visits to India . Edmonton
ACA period from 1980 to 1986 can be easily compared to late Vijayanagara empire, where culture and sports were at it’ best.
Marching into the second and Third Decade: Keeping with the previous traditions. There was slight down turn in our membership due to many people leaving Alberta in mid 1980, and few new comers coming to Alberta due to low economic activity. That has changed since the IT boom, and recent Oilsnads boom. A significant milestone was reached by ACA in 1994. ACA celebrated its 25th Anniversary in a grand way by inviting external delegates from USA, and holding a formal dinner and cultural evening at Coast Terrace Inn. They also held one and only one formal workshop all day, at Hindu Cent re, St. Albert , to discuss the issue that faced our community.
Another important event was initiated and continues to play a role in bringing us ever so close to each other. That is sponsoring every month Pooja at Mahaganapathi temple. This makes sense, since the association is slowly started moving into spiritual domain as the early members reaching a stage; “in search of Nirvana”. ACA members relentlessly pursued to establish Sri Lord Venkateshawara for several years, and finally it became a reality in 2006, at Bharatiya cultural society temple.
Andhra Cultural Association, Edmonton devoted to the awareness and promotion of Telugu culture. It celebrates various Telugu Festivals annually and encourages participation by members and well-wishers at these functions. ACA organizes celebrations for the three main festivals every year: Sankranthi, Ugaadi and Deepavali. In addition ACA organizes a picnic during summer. It also organizes special cultural events from time to time, usually performed by talented artists from our own community. Our Association is one of the oldest Telugu Associations in North America . The Association caters to cultural and social needs of the Telugu people living in and around Edmonton Area.
The vast majority of Telugu people, who live in Edmonton , are already engaged in the activities in one way or another. We also want people to try out new experiences and expand their horizons.
The world is forever getting smaller - and cultural diversity is a very current subject in international relations. It refers to the presence of different cultural groups in one place.
Our Association has been successfully running Telugu Teaching classes for many years.
Telugu School is run by enthusiastic members of our Association to teach reading and writing of Telugu language to our children of all ages. It is a golden opportunity for us to keep our rich tradition and culture alive. Please join your children for Telugu language coaching.
